"Sergio & Sergei" to make its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival
The film co-produced by MEDIAPRO will be screened in the Contemporary World Cinema official section at the 42nd edition of the event

“Sergio & Sergei”, the latest film from the Cuban director Ernesto Daranas Serrano and co-produced by MEDIAPRO, will make its world premiere in the official Contemporary World Cinema section at the 42nd Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) which is taking place in the Canadian city from the 7th to the 17th September.

“Sergio & Sergei”, is, according to its director, “a tragic comedy of the absurd, how unlikely events brought two lives together as two worlds collapsed at the end of the Cold War”. The film tells the story of Sergei, a Soviet cosmonaut left stranded in a Mir space station after the fall of the Soviet block. Sergei manages to make contact with Sergio, an amateur radio enthusiast and Cuban philosophy teacher and an American journalist. Both try to get the big super-powers to put aside their ideological differences to find a solution to the cosmonaut’s situation.

Co-written by Ernesto Daranas and Marta Daranas and starring Tomás Cao (Sergio) and Héctor Noas (Sergei), the film also featured a special guest appearance from Ron Perlman. The well-known American actor, famous for films such as “Hellboy” and “The name of the rose” and series such as “The beauty and the beast” and “Sons of Anarchy” plays Peter, the American journalist who helps the main characters. Ron Perlman is also one of the film’s executive producers.

“Sergio & Sergei” is a MEDIAPRO, RTV Comercial and Cuban Institute of Film and Arts (ICAIC) and will be distributed internationally by WestEnd Films.

The Toronto International Film Festival started in 1976 as a retrospective film screening event for international movies. Since then it quickly became one of the most important and influential film events of the year and considered as an Oscar candidate showcase.

1991 - The USSR is falling apart and Cuba enters its hardest economic crisis. Sergio, a professor of Marxism who can't provide for his family, and Sergei, a Soviet cosmonaut stranded in the Mir space station, share a common passion: amateur radio. Through this hobby, both men will be able to help each other in facing the dramatic changes of their countries.
