Mondays in the Sun (2002)

This film is located in a northern coastal town, which is separated by a slimy green estuary. Many people choose working in factories, refineries, and shipyards for working on the land or the sea. But then industrial rationalization came in.

Rico's bar is the meeting place for a group of unemployed friends. They spend their time chatting and pouring their last hopes into the slot machines… there, memories and projects get confusedly mixed while they share their frustrations and their dreams. Just like a ghost, the shipyard shutdown is still affecting their lives, still changing them.

Every single day is the same old story: a forced holiday, so they all have a reason to be desperate. This is a story about those people who live their lives on Sundays, about those people who spend every Monday in the sun. "Parado" means being unemployed. But in some Latin America countries, "parado" also means standing up.

Cast: Javier Bardem, Luis Tosar, José Ángel Egido, Nieve de Medina, Celso Bugallo.

Asesinato en febrero (2001)

"I heard it on the radio while I was in a taxi. Two people had just been murdered. I couldn't help shouting out . The taxi-driver looked at me through the rear-view mirror and asked where I was from. I said: I'm Basque. A week, maybe ten days later, during one of the inappropriate hours in which I tried to concentrate on my writing, I told myself: write anything going through your mind. It was a clear and precise order."

"The content was brief. People must know the intolerance, they must know those who turn their patriotic feelings into death, those who think they can rightfully destroy everyone else with a different point of view, those who think they can rightfully murder them. I wanted to write a few pages of script about those who justify killing their neighbour only for some historical reason."
