March 2009. Spanair, the second largest Spanish airline, has been in crisis for the last two years. Its former owner, Scandinavian Airlines, tried to sell it for 450 million euros in 2007 but no buyer was found and the value of the company quickly diminished as the losses increased. In July 2008 over 400 workers were laid off. In August, 153 people died when flight 5022 crashed at Madrid airport while taking off -- the lowest point in the history of the company.
In April 2009 a group of Catalan investors bought Spanair for 1 euro and injected 100 million euros in the fledging company under a business plan that aims at showing profits in a couple of years. The new shareholders chose Ferran Soriano, former vicepresident of FC Barcelona, to lead the turnaround.
With unprecedented access, this film follows Spanair’s top managers as they go about implementing the changes, grappling with bleeding losses and labor unrest. “The Turnaround” is an observational film that offers the viewer a unique opportunity: to see from the inside how a company succeeds in getting back on its feet –or goes bust. |

| The Man who Unfolded a Thousand Hearts |
|
For centuries, the human heart was a medical mystery: its function was understood, but not its structure.
Paco Torrent Guasp, a family doctor in a coastal village in Spain, toiled alone during 20 years until he found the answer: the heart is a single muscular band folded over itself in a helical pattern.
His discovery is a medical revolution: doctors have now a map that allows them to understand what goes on when a heart fails. However, Paco had to fight for another 20 years to see his work recognized.

Esto no es el Dakar
Sin dinero. Sin preocupaciones. Un viaje como pocos
|
|
Every January two rallies take to the road for a trip which starts in Europe and ends on the coast of Africa. One is the world famous Dakar race. The other is the Plymouth-Banjul Challenge, an adventure whose values are diametrically opposed to its more famous big brother.
The Challenge consists of simply driving from Plymouth (Great Britain) to Banjul (the capital of the Gambia) in cars worth less than 300 euros. In other words, to travel more than 6,000 km in old bangers with hardly any money, no road-side help but without losing their sense of humour.
The documentary, made by the first and only Spanish team taking part in the Challenge event, follows the adventures of a group of participants as they take in the beauty of the desert. |

Wings over Antarctica |
|
In early March 2007 three Spanish parachute jumpers flew over Antarctica in wingsuits – a feat that nobody had achieved before. The only previous attempt, by a US team, ended in tragedy.
The film follows the meticulous preparation of the flight from the design of the wingsuits to the final stages of the jump –when the unpredictable weather conditions in Antarctica put the expedition on the verge of disaster. Beyond the adventure, this film captures a revealing story about one of the most primal human desires – to feel the exhilarating freedom of birdlike flying.
The documentary was produced by David F. Miralles and Marc Martínez and is a Media 3.14 production with the support of TVC and Rush HD. |

Alas sobre el Polo |
|
A report about the first jump over the North Pole.
The report follows the members of the expedition during their adventure. It shows the training, the preparation and provides an insight into their thinking before the jump. Through the jumpers, viewers discover a sport that has undergone a rapid evolution in the last few years. The suits include solutions that combine increases in the flight time with new and innovative security systems.
The report follows the trip of the adventurers to the Russian camp in Barneo, 150 km from the geographic North Pole and the period of adaptation needed to be able to survive in the extreme conditions. The bad weather prevented the team from jumping until the very last moment.
“Alas sobre el Polo” provides in-depth coverage the three jumps, with cameras built into the helmets allowing the viewers to get a real taste of what the spectacular jump involved.
“Alas sobre el Polo” was directed by Alejandro Moreu, with camera work from Pedro Ballesteros and produced by Montse Bartuí. |

| When Life Stops: the case of Paco Larrañaga |
|
Paco Larrañaga, a young Filipino, is on death row in Manila for a crime he didn't commit. The film retraces Paco's story as he finds himself caught in a nightmarish sequence of events. He is accused of two murders but only one body was ever found -and there are serious doubts about its identity. Over 30 witnesses place him 500 km. away from the scene of the crime but the judge dismisses them and gives credit to a police informer who is linked to the victims' family. The courtroom becomes a circus as the media readily sentence Paco even before the trial starts.
"When Life Stops" is the story of a blatant miscarriage of justice, but it is also the story of how Paco's family has been shaken by years of legal fighting - which have taken a toll on its deep-rooted religious faith. As Paco's sister puts it, their sin seems to be that "we believed in the system".
A Media 3.14 - Thoughtful Robot, Inc. co-production. Directed by Michael Collins. Executive producers Joan Úbeda and Marty Syjuco.

|
Z-102 THE STORY OF AN ILLUSION |
|
This is the story of a man and his dream. The man is Wifredo Ricart, Spain’s best automotive engineer. His dream: the Pegaso Z-102, the world’s most advanced and modern sportscar during the 1950s.
The 102 was exceptional for its mechanical performance and stunning design —and for where it came from. In the 1950s, Spain was in the darkest hours of Franco’s dictatorship and nearly bankrupt. Ricart’s dream couldn’t be sustained for long and the project was cancelled when only 86 units had been produced.
The documentary tells the story of the car and its creator through interviews with his sons, fellow engineers, factory workers and former car owners. It also includes rare footage from newsreels and family archives, and a sequence of a 102 on a racetrack, driven by the same pilot who established the world speed records 50 years ago.
For all those who appear in the film, the 102 encapsulates the bittersweet memories of a time long past. Beyond their admiration for the technical quality of the car, they all convey the emotion of a period of their lives they will never forget.

| LAS HURDES, AFTER BUÑUEL |
|
|
A Media 3.14 production for Canal+ Spain.
The name of Las Hurdes was synonymous for a long time with
"Tierra sin Pan" from the 1933 Luis Buñuel
documentary of that name.
Since then many things have changed but it's still difficult
to understand Las Hurdes without realising the enormous impact
that the work had on the village. The mere mention of Buñuel
provokes reactions of all kinds. One hundred years after the
birth of Luis Buñuel, this documentary returns to Las
Hurdes to talk to its inhabitants, to investigate through
the accounts of the people who have lived their lives in the
shadow of Buñuel's documentary.
It's a portrait of three generations who have been marked
by one of the great Spanish historical documentaries. |
